  42. or viewChildren), tap on it and the slots list of it will be shown. You may

  108.  Incoming! 0.99b - Incoming! was created as a design and programming test on
  109. the Newton. Basically what we wanted to do was see what kind of things 
  110. could be done with arcade-like animation. This game is more of a 
  111. programming demo for the us then anything else, but we thought other people
  112. might find it entertaining. Your mission in this game is to defend your 
  113. cities from waves of ICBM's. This is accomplished with the defense missiles
  114. you have. Because of tracking stations already destroyed in the war, you 
  115. can only track two of your missiles at once. This means you'll have to 
  116. choose your shots wisely. Have fun and save your cities!

  122.  UNT Map 1.0 - UNT Map is an interactive map of the University of North 
  123. Texas Campus. It was created as an experiment to see if this sort of thing 
  124. is feasible, and also because I got tired of using a stupid Xerox copy of 
  125. the existing campus map whenever I got a support call. Even if you don't go
  126. to UNT, check out the map! You can see a list of the buildings, select one 
  127. and be shown where it is. Or, you can tap on a building and be shown the 
  128. name. Good implementation of mapping! Contact the author for the code, or 
  129. help in making your own maps!

  144.  TapStyles 1.0 - TapStyles is a simple little applet that, when activated, 
  145. places a small dot in the upper right area of the Newton screen that allows
  146. quick access to the styles palette. I wrote it primarily for my own use as 
  147. I found all other similar type applets not quite right for my own needs. It
  148. is small, unobtrusive, and, as far as I can tell, bug free. Once installed,
  149. tap on the little fountain pen nib icon and it will place a small dot in 
  150. the upper right area of the Newton screen. When you tap on this dot, which 
  151. is always available from any app, it instantly brings up the styles 
  152. palette. Tapping on it again puts the styles palette away.

  167.  StewPot1.0b8 - The soup inspector for the Newton. What is a soup, anyway? 
  168. Everything you place in your Newton is stored in a “soup”. A soup is 
  169. different from both a flat file (or document), and more flexible that a 
  170. database, which is why Apple came up with a different term to describe it. 
  171. But like a database, a soup has separate entries, which can be thought of 
  172. as records with similar data structure. Unlike personal computers, soups 
  173. aren’t tied to a directory/folder-like structure. This makes it easier in 
  174. some ways, harder in others. StewPot lets you - Copy entries in a soup, 
  175. move entries from one store to another (Newt card to another), see what 
  176. shareware apps add, remove a soup entirely and more. Full documentation.

  182.  Shopping List 1.3 - Shopping List was developed to demonstrate a potential 
  183. Newton application in a manufacturing firm. (Grocery shopping is very much 
  184. like "order picking" in a warehouse with many SKU's.). Shopping List has 
  185. been steadily improved as it's been used as a test ground for new 
  186. approaches to Newton software. We envision a version 1.4 that will link 
  187. Shopping List to the Find and Intelligent Assistance features of Newton. 
  188. New to this version - The pull-down store section menu has been replaced 
  189. with a palette of icon buttons. Audio feedback is included. Scrolling the 
  190. overview lists is now in page steps instead of line steps.

  196.  Safe Guard 1 - Safe Guard is a utility that allows you to password protect 
  197. your PCMCIA cards. In order to use the card, the person inserting the card 
  198. must enter the password. In order to use, tap the Safe Guard icon in the 
  199. Extras Drawer. Tap the "Password" button and enter your password to use. 
  200. Now whenever the card is put into a Newton, a password screen will open 
  201. asking for the password. Upon entering the proper password, Safe Guard will
  202. open itself if someone placed the card into a Newton. Safe Guard will not 
  203. open if there is not a log of bad attempts. You may tap any of the bad 
  204. attempts in the log to get more info about the attempt. To turn off 
  205. password protection, set the password to nothing just as in the Prefs.

  211.  Pour - Pour is a little utility that will allow you to choose any soup from
  212. the available stores on your Newt (or an onion — er — union soup if you 
  213. have a card) and will pour it down the serial port at 9600-8-N-1. Pour 
  214. sends the soup as text, with frames enclosed between braces and their 
  215. entries labeled and arrays enclosed between square brackets. Pour came 
  216. about for two reasons. First, I wrote a little app to keep track of the 
  217. hours I spend working for my various clients (anyone who would like a copy,
  218. please ask — I haven't distributed it just because I haven't yet decided 
  219. just what I want to do with it) and then realized that I probably didn't 
  220. want to let the data accumulate in my Newt forever. Hence Pour!

  226.  Password - Password is a small utility for quickly turning on an off 
  227. password protection on the Newton. Its icon in the extras drawer indicates
  228. whether password protection is currently turned on or off. Click on
  229. its icon to toggle the state. The built-in way of turning on/off password 
  230. protection is somewhat cumbersome, especially if you do it often. To turn 
  231. off password protection you use Prefs, enter your old password, and leave 
  232. the new password line blank. To turn password protection back on, you
  233. return to Prefs and reenter your password.  The Password utility is so much
  234. easier!! Use of Password is free of charge.

  253.  Memory - It's a simple app that displays memory used out of total memory 
  254. (internal). It also has a GC() (garbage collection) button on it. It floats
  255. and is draggable and is small enough that it shouldn't get in the way. It 
  256. updates every 5 seconds. It's interesting to delete notes and names and 
  257. watch your total memory grow as well to write notes and watch it shrink. 
  258. You can watch memory grow until it's about topped out and then - boom - the
  259. Newton does a garbage collection. The point of this tool was just to make 
  260. for a very simple memory indicator.

  266.  MailSaver 1.2 - MailSaver is a one-stop NewtonMail assistant. It gives you 
  267. access to your inbox, outbox, sprintnet access number (including keeping a 
  268. list of your frequently used access numbers). It can put away mail 
  269. enclosures, save the text of a message to a new notepad entry, and strip 
  270. internet routing headers from messages before saving them. New in version 
  271. 1.2 - MailSaver will break messages into multiple notepad entries if it 
  272. otherwise would not fit. You can now set the font, size, and style in which
  273. messages are saved. You can now set the folder where MailSaver will save 
  274. your messages. Stored access numbers are now sorted alphabetically. The 
  275. strip headers option is now more robust.

  281.  Mail Numbers 1.0demo - With a NewtonMail account, a Newton, a modem, and a 
  282. phone line you can stay in touch no matter where you go. Unfortunately, 
  283. accessing NewtonMail while you are on the go isn't as easy as using the 
  284. Newton itself. The biggest problem is that, as you move around the country,
  285. the phone number you have to dial to access NewtonMail changes from city to
  286. city. Of course, Apple provides a booklet listing all of the current 
  287. NewtonMail phone numbers for each city, but that booklet takes up valuable 
  288. travel space. Wouldn't it be great if there were a piece of Newton software
  289. that would let you change your NewtonMail phone number with just a few taps
  290. of the pen? Well there is! And, you just downloaded it! Demo.

  297. to make Newtons independent of desktop computers and cables. Magic App will
  298. allow you to - Move applications between the Newton's internal storage and 
  299. external storage cards; Beam applications to another Newton; and Remove 
  300. applications with a single tap of the pen. The only caveat is that Magic 
  301. App is constrained by how much working memory the Newton has. This working 
  302. memory is called the Frames Heap Memory. It is a fixed size so you can only
  303. move and beam fairly small applications. Currently, 20-30K. HOWEVER, Apple 
  304. has said they will be fixing this limitation so on future Newton devices, 
  305. you may be able to beam much larger applications with this utility.

  325. for the Newton MessagePad. Actually, this is a version for New Zealand. 
  326. Here’s an undocumented feature - you can drag GSTcalc by it’s title! 
  327. GSTcalc calculates on rounded numbers, which is the right way to calculate 
  328. taxes (if you don’t do this, you will end up with a 1 cent difference.).

  336.  DateCaln - These freeware applications are for those who have to 
  337. synchronize their Newton calendar with an outside calendar. The first 
  338. program, “DateList” is for extracting changes made on the Newton for 
  339. addition to the calendar. The second program, “UpdateCal” replaces the 
  340. Intelligent Assistant for adding entries into the Newton Calendar. 
  341. “DateList” lists future calendar entries which have changed between 
  342. executions. The lists may be printed, faxed or copied to the notepad. When 
  343. the close box is pressed, “DateList” will ask to reset the date last 
  344. synchronized. An “OK” will clear these entries from future lists, while 
  345. “Cancel” does not reset the date.

  352. alert you if the battery level drops below a user-defined threshold. If 
  353. you've used your Newton a lot, you already know how quickly it can eat 
  354. through batteries. But, you will probably be surprised at how fast your 
  355. battery life decreases once your batteries drop below a certain level. 
  356. Battery Brain monitors that decrease and will warn you as your batteries 
  357. become weaker and weaker. Battery Brain will also automatically turn off 
  358. sounds and the "Receive beams automatically" setting at user defined levels
  359. to help conserve battery power. This version is a complete rewrite from the
  360. ground up, with many changes!

  367. human body has inner clock or metabolic rythms with constant cycles of 
  368. time. Currently, three cycles starting at birth in a positive direction are
  369. postulated. The 23-day or physical cycle relates with physical vitality, 
  370. endurance and energy. The 28-day or sensitivity cycle relates with 
  371. sensitivity, intuition and cheerfulness. The 33-day or cognitive cycle 
  372. relates with mental alertness and judgement. For each cycle, a day is 
  373. considered either high, low or critical. Now your Newton can display a two 
  374. week biorythm after you input your name, birthdate and date to calculate. 
  375. Biorythms also takes advantage of Newton's Assist function!

  381.  Accountable Ltd - Accountable Ltd. is an account manager for the Newton. 
  382. This Ltd. version is limited to five accounts. Each of those accounts are 
  383. limited to twenty transactions. If you decide to move up to Accountable, 
  384. the data you create in Ltd. can be used in it. Accountable responds to many
  385. words and phrases via Assist. Accountable only adds the verb ‘Pay’ to the 
  386. Assist menu, but it will also respond to - Charge, Deposit, Withdraw, Fly, 
  387. and variations. Try running a phrase like “Charge $30 to Visa at Acme for 
  388. shirt” through Assist, substituting your own credit account reference. Once
  389. you are ready to move up to the full working version, just send in the 
  390. included order form.

  938. running. When you turn the Newt back on, you'll be pleasantly surprised to 
  939. see the time still ticking away. The interface is as simple as possible.

  1171. an 8x8 grid. You must try to find them by firing rays into the grid and 
  1172. observing if and where the ray exits the grid. The balls cause the ray to

  1174. to the side of a ball. By examining the results, you must try to determine 
  1175. the locations of the balls in the least time and fewest nuber of shots
